Totally okay with that.
Saturday mornings are for dance class. In a few minutes, breakfast will be made, then it'll be time to get into uniform (theatrical pink tights, black leotard) and head uptown.
While Ro taps and twirls, I usually go to Satsuma (sometimes with my pal Bonnie, whose bambina goes to dance class w/ mine). Fresh juices, delish breakfast specials, the place just makes me happy.
See? Braised short rib & caramelized onion sandwich, green salad, A-B-C juice. Perfect. (Full disclosure: edited while eating.)
I love my city (warts and all) but it really bugs me that we have so few healthy alternatives for casual dining. When we were visiting my cousin in the DC area this summer, we ate at a place called Nando's Peri-peri. Grilled chicken. Well seasoned veggies for side dishes. Healthier than fried seafood or Po-boys and the food was quite tasty, even for a chain (based in South Africa!)...which as much as i can be anti-chain, I would Be utterly blissful if one found its way into Orleans Parish. I know we are entering interesting times here, the Nola-based Top Chef season just began (nope, still don't watch), and my hope is that some of the unexpected best of Nola gets a spotlight on the national stage.
I love Satsuma because its space is airy and I can get something not coffee and eggs, if I so choose. Don't get me wrong- me and Waffle House hash browns have a long torrid history- but you cannot eat that stuff every day. Or every week, even.
But this morning, my 45 minutes or so of peace will be spent with apple-carrot-beet juice and something divine from their breakfast specials.
Rosemary is a morning person. I am most definitely NOT.
It works well. She gets her dance on, and I get a chance to be recover from her tenaciously perky personality in the morning.
Winning!
