now we are five.. and a half...

Rosemary asked me if school would still be going on in February. I assured her it would still be school time in February, uncertain where this conversation was going. She proceeded to tell me about the birthday celebrations at her school, and how she hopes to have cupcakes with her class on her birthday.

"You know, Mommie, next year? When I turn... SIX!"

Nope, not ready for it. Not at all. Where does the time go?!

I think of the musical RENT, and wonder how can I, how should I measure the years of her life? In red beans, in apples, in juice boxes, in cheese sticks, in gummy snacks? All of which made up today's lunch, but are also among her favorite foods, period?

Hard to believe that this year marked the shift of her Dad being gone longer than the time she had with him. Bittersweet. Don't get teary on me, folks... I'm okay. Really.

But check out this little doozy of a picstitch I shared on Instagram earlier today:

It amazes me. It really does. The little changes you don't notice because you're so busy being Mom, that you don't slow down and see that this small person is literally blooming right before your eyes...wow.

You can see that she's older, taller, more animated. But her smile, her nose, her eyes - she is still his stringbean, but longer, lankier, and certainly more verbose than her younger self. there is curiosity twinkling in those deep brown eyes, and unquestionably more mischief lurking too. But her face? Her sweet face is still essentially the same.

and, despite her picky-ish eating, she's healthy and brilliant. seriously, i'm so lucky, it's humbling.

take the time to stop and smell the roses. or the rosemary... you know what i mean.
