But Ro's school has a "no chocolate" rule where lunch foodstuffs are concerned. Which I find a little strange, since more kids are allergic to peanuts than are allergic to cacao product.
Being th food nerd that I am, I decided to test the water and see just how much attention is paid. Last friday, I sent a Nutella and raspberry jam sandwich in ro's lunch. It went undetected.
So, I tried my luck again today. My mom is picking her up, and I am antsy to see if the sandwich comes back, and if the feedback note that (usuall) comes home with Ro mentions the content of her sandwich.
Here's the catch: in the US, for a product to be accurately labeled "chocolate" it must contain cocoa butter (NOT hydrogenated oils! there was a much despised - and FAILED - attempt to change this a couple of years back). According to the product website:
Nutella is a tasty hazelnut spread that contains quality ingredients such as skim milk and a hint of cocoa. Nutella® spread on whole wheat bread, or any multigrain product, with orange juice or skim milk is a good combination for a balanced breakfast that the entire family will enjoy. Nutella contains no artificial colors or preservatives. No cocoa butter.
Hence, NOT chocolate.
I win (and so does Ro)!
Here are some other suggestions for Nutella sandwich goodness:
- raspberry jam, or any other other berry jam
- orange marmalade
- on raisin toast
- nutella on one piece of bread, a healthy slab of soft brie cheese on the other, and mashed together! (my personal favorite - borrowed from a dessert at Stella!)
- sliced bananas
You can thank me later.
